One founder. Two cities. One craft.

Bright Signage didn't start in a glossy showroom. It started in a small unit in Dubai, with one machine, one founder, and a phone that rang at hours nobody wants to admit to. Najma Lakho — founder, managing director, and still the person you're most likely to hear from when you place a serious order — built the company the slow way: one client, one project, one signage job at a time.

In Dubai's signage market — fast-moving, competitive, unforgiving — she earned a reputation for something quietly old-fashioned: doing the job properly. Sharp engraving on brass that didn't need apologising for. Acrylic signs cut cleanly, finished by hand, delivered when she said they'd be delivered. Customers came back. Then their customers' customers came back. Within a few years, what began as a one-woman venture had become a respected signage business serving offices, hotels and trade clients across the UAE.

"I came to the UK for the same reason anyone comes to the UK — to build a future. But I brought my craft with me."

The move to the United Kingdom wasn't about chasing a bigger market. Najma had always loved the British eye for craft — the brass plaques on heritage buildings, the engraved presentation cases in jewellers' windows, the hand-finished signage on village shopfronts. She saw a country that still values the personal touch, and she wanted to be part of it.

She settled in Rochester, Kent — a town with more history than most cities, where the Medway curls past the cathedral and the old dockyards still hum with workshops doing things by hand. Dickens once walked these streets; the Romans laid the road that runs through it. It's the kind of place where a craft business doesn't have to explain itself — it just has to be good at what it does.

The workshop now sits in Dock Space Innovations, an industrial unit a stone's throw from the river. It is, in every sense, the kind of place a craft business ought to live: low-key, hard-working, made for making. Lasers hum in one corner. A rotary engraver clicks away in another. Najma still walks the floor most days.

From that workshop, Bright Signage now offers its full range of services to the UK: custom laser engraving, bespoke etching, personalised engraved gifts, custom signage and plaques, industrial labels and tags, and custom printing. As the business grew, customers started asking for one thing more than anything else — gifts. Personal ones. Engraved hip flasks for a father's retirement. A wedding plaque with a date that had taken years to arrive at. A leather journal with a daughter's initials, given on her eighteenth.

So The Engravers was born — a subsidiary of Bright Signage LTD, dedicated entirely to those moments. Same hands. Same machines. Same standards. But a focus on the gifts that mark the milestones — the kind of objects that get kept in a drawer for decades, then passed down because someone thought to put a name on them.

Today, the team Najma has built around her serves customers from Cornwall to Caithness — wedding parties in Yorkshire, electricians in Glasgow, school headmasters in Surrey, retired engineers in Devon. The orders are bigger than they were in Dubai. The hours are still long. The phone still rings. Some things, by design, don't change.
